Can you please elaborate more on Office not working?
Microsoft Office 2011 or older was never compatible with macOS Catalina or Big Sur because it was 32-bit. If you're referring to a newer version of Office or a different office program, more details would be appreciated.

I have Office 2016 installed on my Mac running the latest version of Big Sur; it works fine. That said it would probably support either a one-time purchase or an Office 365 subscription, as activation is done using license keys given to the appropriate Microsoft account.
I suspect that the version of Office you have is 32-bit. To check, click the Apple logo in the top left corner and choose About This Mac. Click System Report, then choose Legacy Software in the window that opens. If Office appears in that list, it is 32-bit and cannot run in either Catalina or Big Sur.
On most Intel-based Macs, it is still possible to downgrade to an older version of macOS. Doing so requires an erase, unless you made a Time Machine backup before you upgraded.
Macs with Apple Silicon can only be downgraded to macOS Big Sur 11.0.1, and even then only if they shipped with that version (instead of a newer version).
I was having the same issue. Installation seemed to stall with15 minutes to go. Rebooted in safe mode and tried again. Still seemed to stall at 15 min, but I just let it run and after a half an hour “minutes remaining” advanced to 10.
Start up in safe mode and install. That usually works.
Not totally accurate - Revert your Mac to a previous macOS version That is - if the User actually uses Time Machine Backup it is possible.
dont install if you don't want to have to buy a new office program . I had many other inconveniences
Thank You

Keep going - in REAL TIME 10 minutes could be 30 minutes. From experience the count down clock is very promising but not factual.
