Silenced Calls

I am using an iPhone 7 and my wife is using an iPhone XR. In my phone, ring is not being received when the calls are from unsaved numbers; then a notification appears that there was a silent call from the number appearing there. No such issue is there in my wife’s iPhone XR. I find that similar problem is faced by many. The resin for some calls going silent is seen mentioned as “turning on DND”. Actually in my phone DND is switched off. Yet there is an option to select when the calls have to be silenced, either ‘Always’ or ‘When the phone is locked’. This option should not have been there when DND is not ‘ON’. I think there is a bug. To my belief this issue started appearing only recently, after installation of iOS 14.3 or 14.4. Could anyone suggest a solution?

Just by merely disconnecting Bluetooth is not going to help. If things are bluetooth related by turning it OFF the poster was terminating a connection between the bluetooth headset and another device. The sounds may have been going to something that the poster was once connected to.

A few suggestions below including Do Not Disturb to be sure:

  1. Check to see that the Silent switch is not set to ON. Silent switch is located on the Top Left Side of your iPhone.
  2. Open Settings Sounds & Haptics Ringer and Alerts : Make sure this is not set to OFF or too Low. Set Change with Buttons to OFF. Below that Make sure that there is a Ringtone selected.
  3. Check to see that Do Not Disturb is set to OFF. Open Settings Do Not Disturb : Set this to OFF
  4. Check to see that Silence Unknown Callers is set to OFF. Open Settings Phone Silence Unknown Callers : Set this to OFF
  5. Make sure that a ringer sound is assigned. Open Settings Sounds & Haptics Ringtone : Ensure that a Ringtone is assigned here.
  6. If all of the above is OK on your iPhone then Try and Force Restart your iPhone EXACTLY as shown below and see whether that resolves the issue:
  • Press and quickly release Volume UP button
  • Press and quickly release Volume DOWN button
  • Press and Hold the SIDE button until an Apple logo appears and then release the Side button (Can take up to 20 seconds. (DO NOT release Side Button when invited to Slide Power OFF).

I had ensured all these requirements on my phone. I once again checked everything after seeing the above suggestion. The problem was coming frequently despite ensuring all the above. I have not received any call from an unknown number after posting my issue. I shall check later when any such calls come.

I came across a suggestion in the community to switch off Bluetooth. The person who posted the suggestion has not given any reason for doing this but his problem appears to have been resolved after he switched off Bluetooth. I have also done it. If this works it is fine.

I feel there is a bug. Hopefully this will be set right.
