Airpods max - do they get audio over USB-C - Lightning cable?

So, this is my question:

Airpods max - do they get audio over USB-C - Lightning cable from macbook pro for example?

If not- why?

Why for the Gods sake? Aren’t they’re a lightning audio receiver for said $35 cable? Or there are NO actual lightning inside- just socket for power and analog audio?
