Macbook Pro 15" 2016 Touchbar (T1 Chip) -- Touch ID limit reached?

Hi all,

My Macbook Pro's Touch ID suddenly gave me an error from one use to another. I did not move the laptop, nor have I ever had any kind of liquid damage. The Macbook Pro has always been in a case.

When I opened the lid (I had used the Touch ID just 20 mins before that to unlock my Macbook), I could not see the Touch ID text on the Touchbar ( I still don't.). I used my password to log in and saw that the previous fingerprints had disappeared.

When I try to add new fingerprints it give me the following error:

When I try to click on "Unlocking you mac", it give me the following error:

I have tried the following fixes already :

  1. Resetting PRAM and SMC,
  2. Updating OS to latest release
  3. "xartutil –erase-all" in Recovery Mode
  4.  "bioutil --write --purge" in Terminal

None of the above have worked and my Touch ID is not working. Does anyone have any experience with this? As a Software Developer, I am very much convinced that this is a firmware-level issue. Could the serialisation of my T1chip have gotten messed up?

Any help/experience on this would be much appreciated! Thank you!

Hi All,

I had the same problem and it has been resolved - though I'm not entirely sure how. But I'll tell my tale in case something helps:

I tried everything previously listed (resetting PRAM, NVRAM, using xartutil command in recovery mode, diagnostics, etc.). I ended up going with the nuclear option of completely reformatting my hard drive and reinstalling macOS (from Time Machine Backup). This was at the advice of Apple Support.

It DIDN'T work. The problem still persisted even after I wiped the drive.

But - I did two things during my system restore that correlated with the problem going away:

1) I turned Automatic Login On and then Off again (this was while I was setting up Apple Pay)

2) In the process of reinstalling everything, the System Preferences Pane stalled (I was probably giving permission to some app or other). Anyway - I force-quit the System Preferences Pane -

and wouldn't you know it -> my TouchID pane was restored and ready for action!

So - obviously I cannot guarantee or even say for sure this is what cleared the problem - but ... maybe worth a try? If someone does give it a go (auto login ON/OFF + force-quitting the system prefs pane) and it works, please respond to let others know. I also don't know if part of this solution was reformatting one's hard drive. For everyone else's sake - I hope not.

good luck everyone!

Greetings thk1994,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities! It seems you're unable to use Touch ID with your Mac, as you're receiving an alert the fingerprint limit has been reached.

Although you mentioned not damaging your Mac, have you had a chance to check Apple Diagnostics to see if any error is detected related to Touch ID?

You can see those steps in the article below:

Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support

Additionally, testing with a different user account can help determine if it's a system-wide issue. If the issue persists, seek service to have your Mac inspected:

Kind regards.

Thanks for sharing your experience ahbell!

Unfortunately this did not work for me. What I do not understand is how is this problem so common, yet Apple has not done anything about it in their updates. There have been two major updates since my issue first started, yet these updates did not address this issue.

Another thing that escapes me is how can the hardware be ok but no software based solution seems to work to fix this issue.

Hi All, I have the same problem:

Touch ID no longer works. When I try to activate it or add a fingerprint, I get the same error as the OP.

I have tried:

All of the OP solutions, including:

  1. Resetting PRAM and SMC,
  2. Updating OS to latest release
  3. "xartutil –erase-all" in Recovery Mode
  4.  "bioutil --write --purge" in Terminal

I have also tried:

  1. reinstalling MacOS (from Recovery)
  2. Running diagnostics as per above reply (everything came back as good)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thanks!
