My Mac mini installed MacOS BigSur automatically overnight

My Mac mini installed MacOS BigSur & has now allowed me to log in but I am unable to open Safari, Opera, Microsoft Office Suite, pdf reader, photos as a starting point. The drive is still churning away. Is it still updating? Do I have a problem?

Safari will not open I am unable to open Safari. The operating system on my MacBook Pro is Sierra 10.12.6.
