AirPods Will Not Connect

I am trying to connect a new pair of AirPods to my iPhone 12. I have followed the directions, multiple times, but they still won't connect or stay connected. Please help.

Start here:

If your AirPods won't connect

If they connect, but won't stay connected, see this:

If the sound from your wireless headphones cuts out or is distorted
