How to remove activation lock from ipad
I have an ipad that I got from a friend who doesn't know the apple id that was used to set it up initially. How can I remove the activation lock and use myapple id?

Your friend should find the following to be helpful in recovering their AppleID - with which they can resolve the Activation Lock.

As you will discover, unless you are the owner of the AppleID that was last used to activate the device, or unless you can secure the cooperation of the previous owner, you’ll not be able to defeat or bypass the Activation Lock. Without documentary evidence that you are the original owner (such as sales receipt showing the serial number), Apple won’t assist - and nobody here will be able to help you.

You can't. Aside from logging into that Apple ID, the only way to activate it is to supply Apple with its original purchase receipt; the activation lock is an anti-theft measure.
