Migration Assistant Failed

Hi there, I was trying to transfer all my data from my old Mac to my new one which I got today and first of all my new Mac needed a system upgrade which I did. When that was finished I started Migration Assistant again but now I keep getting the message "Authentication Failed". Unable to retrieve credentials for authorising user. I'm stumped and need to fix this quick as my old Mac has been sold and I need to give it to the person who bought it! Thanks in advance if anyone knows what I should do...

You need to reformat it with a series of steps that would require someone in apple to take you through. Basically, you need to restart your system, and then hold on to Control, Option, and R. This will bring you to a page where you need to ensure that your HD is not encrypted. If it is encrypted you need to change it to NTFS and then try to mount your disk using Disk Utility.

Once that is done, you may need to upgrade the OS to BigSur. This may also require you to upgrade your old Mac to the latest OS. Once this is done you are on track to start migration.

The whole thing may take a few hours if your HD is 1 TB because the turning of the globe that you will see takes time to process. Hope it works for you.
