Migration Assistant Failed

my problem was solved eventually when I hard restarted (by pressing the button rather than just choosing restart from menu).

I've got similar error with migration assistant, and managed to fix it by doing SMC reset https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

I gave up with Migration assistant in the end. Most of my files are on the Cloud so when I logged into my Apple account on the new machine everything was there and I just had to download Office 365 and a few other apps.

I had another problem in that I could log onto my Mac with the Mac password but when I tried to change something that required a password it wouldn't accept it. I phoned Support and was on the phone about 25 minutes, they helped me change the password and after this I could set up the fingerprint and add cards to wallet.

Really happy with my new MacBook Pro, my old one was a 2014 model and I purchased it preused so to have a brand new one is wonderful.

Below are the instructions to follow when migrating:

If you have already done SA on the new computer then simply connect the Time Machine External Hard Disk using a USB cable and launch Migration Assistant (MA) which is located in Applications - Utilities - MA. Then follow the on-screen prompts.

This method works 100% of the time assuming your Time Machine EHD is in working order.

Exactly the same for me. New MacBook Pro found migration assistant, old MBP did as well, but wouldn't work as old MBP was on Grand Sur. So just spend 3 hours updating new one to Grand Sur and now I'm getting the "Authentication failed" message.

Thank you, unfortunately it does not work. The Migration Assistant opens and after pressing the button "Continue" displays the message "Authentication failed". With the older version there was one more step before that where I was supposed to enter the password. Now no password prompt has been displayed.

What does SA mean, please?

SA is Setup Assistant.

Exact same scenario here. Old MBP was on Big Sur....updated the new from Cat to BS and now I get this error message when trying to migrate using time machine.

Follow my directions and Migration Assistant works 100% of the time, use some variation and you are throwing the dice.

nlmac75, migrating over wifi will take forever. Do you have a usb cable that can connect the two computers together? Do you have a backup? - doesn't have to be TimeMachine. I used a clone of my old MBP disk to migrate to my new iMac. if you migrate over wifi, be prepared for it to possibly take overnight and make sure neither computer is set to sleep.

On top of this, I can't add a fingerprint - I click on the Add sign and nothing happens - and I get an error when I try to add a card for Apple Pay.

I think it's all linked to a log in problem! But can't understand it because I can actually log in from the first screen fine!
