Does it happen to you that the backup points in Time Machine differ when the external disk is not plugged in?
What would happen if I try to go back in time to one of the points without the external disk being plugged in?

Local Snapshots are stored on the startup drive, space permitting. When you don't have your backup drive attached, you see the local snapshots.
If the backup drive is not attached, you are only seeing what is stored in the local snapshots and those backups are the only ones you could restore from.
