does anyone know why is this? it has been stuck for hours. i’ve been cancelling the update and when i started it again it stuck again, it keeps repeating

You do not say what exact Mac is this?

or

what current macOS you are running?


Big Sur states that you will need 35.5 GB of free storage when upgrading from High Sierra or newer, and 44.5 GB when upgrading from an older versions.


If your Network download speed is suspect, try a faster Network.


If your issue continues try a safeboot to download & install—

SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262 third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode, cache cleared, system accelerations are disabled, it removes malware, a reboot will put it back to normal mode.



If you successfully downloaded the Upgrade it will be sitting in your Application folder "Install macOS Big Sur.app"
