my whole photo gallery is gone

Do you have an iCloud backup? I think you can restore from that, or download your pictures. If you search the support site it should have some instructions. Otherwise, I have another idea.
No guarantee this will work. But, I’ve had my whole gallery disappear a few times. (I have an iPhone 8 with iOS 11.2.6.) But then it actually self-restores afterwards.
So first: try to avoid using your phone, if possible. Delete or offload a few apps. Then, wait overnight - see if anything starts coming back. It might say “Restoring...” at the bottom.
Let me know if that does anything. Also, can you post some more details? Your iPhone version, your iOS version, and how much used vs. free space you have?
For now, see if you have any photos in iCloud, and then try to download them onto your computer. (How to do this depends on whether you have Mac or Windows. You can find instructions if you look around. Do this part now, ASAP.)
