back up mini to time machine

I have a time machine that has been used to back up both mine and my wife's Macs, I have now brought a 2020 Mac mini M1 when it tries to back up to the time machine it said last time there is a problem with the back ups. if I open time machine preferences it wants to erase all the back ups on the drive. if I use the time machine link at top I can get into the drive and see all the previous backups. if I try to run back up I get a message 'time machine detected that your backups on airpot time capsule.local cannot be reliably restored. time machine must erase your existing backup history and start a new backup to correct this. if I do this will it remove my wife's back ups. can any one help me on this please, Dave.

1) How did you Migrate your data to the new Mac Mini?

2) Are the backups on different partitions?

In other words, when you first started using the Time Capsule for backups, did you divide it into two partitions?

(one partition for your backups and one partition for the wife's backups)

Best answer at this point is,

If the backups are on different partitions, then you should be able to erase only your partition and start over.

If both backups are on the same partition, then you will loose both sets of backups and need to start over.
