Can Instagram Access My Phone Data?

I’m concerned about the new Instagram privacy policy updates - it sounds like they will have full access to my camera and microphone even when not using the app, and they will be able to access my contacts and various other app information. Is there really a back door for apps to be able to retrieve my data? Can Instagram access my camera, microphone, contacts, and personal information?

We'd like to help put your mind at ease as much as we can about using Instagram and your data:

The first thing we always recommend is to keep your the device you're using and the apps on it up to date. If you're using a beta OS version, we do recommend either leaving beta feedback, or restoring to the latest official OS version for your device.
