big sur 11.1 update disabling pop gmail

Hi there,

I recently purchased a new Mac Mini and successfully migrated my two email accounts. Everything was working fine until I updated to Big Sur 11.1 and all my mailbox folders disappeared. Upon looking into this it appears that my Gmail account has been converted to an IMAP account. The settings within Gmail (logging into my Gmail account through Safari) are that POP is enabled and IMAP is disabled. I have a second POP configured account from my ISP provider Plusnet and this is fine and is described under Accounts as still being POP. I see there are clearly some IMAP issues with Big Sur but I cannot find any discussion on this issue. Any input on sorting it would be gratefully received,

Thanks for taking the time to read my post, Alastair

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my thread, it is appreciated. After various investigations with other email clients it seems that Big Sur is overruling Gmail when the settings are set as IMAP disabled and POP enabled within my Google account. I believe with 2 step verification enabled on a Google account is what maybe causing this. I have since managed to get the POP account working which I'll describe below in case anyone else has a similar issue.

First I created an "App Password" for Mac Mail in my Google account.

Then I opened Mail and went to create a new account. Here I selected "configure manually" rather than click the Google option. Then I typed in my Google username and put in the 16 digit App password that I had generated in my Google account, not my main google password. I clicked Ok (or verify, can't remember the exact button name!) and got a verification error message, but it then gave a pull down option for POP or IMAP account which wasn't available on the previous screen. I selected POP, and also changed the first part of the incoming mail server to pop so it reads "pop.googlemail.com" not "imap.googlemail.com". The outgoing mail server didn't need to be changed. Clicked ok and everything seems to be currently working nicely in POP configuration. Hopefully this might help someone having similar issues.

Thank you again for taking the time to help, Alastair

Hello alastair52,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It looks like your email account settings was changed on your Mac after updating to Big Sur, and we'd be happy to look into this with you.

To get started, please use the following link to get information about your email settings:

Mail Settings Lookup

Next, let's try to run Connection Doctor to see if that matches what you got from the previous step, and modify it if needed:

Use Connection Doctor in Mail on Mac

We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.
