I see the option for the iTunes Store on the right of the Apple Music app and can connect to it. however, I cannot search for music on my MacBook.
I can only purchase music that appears on the home page of the iTunes Store.
If I search for music I am taken to Apple Music, which I don't want.

I just tested it again and it works for me. I've not heard of others with a problem when using the directions in Buy music from the iTunes Store - Apple Support so you may want to contact Apple Support to see if they can help.
it takes me only to Apple Music. I am not able to purchase songs or albums within the iTunes Store. I have zero interest in Apple Music.
As FoxFith explained, once you click the search text box, you should see 3 buttons/choices to the right of the screen: "Your Library", "Apple Music" and "iTunes Store". Click "iTunes Store" and now all your searches will apply to the iTunes Store.
I do not have the search option with my new MacBook Pro
