importing itunes playlists to apple music

i have a new m1 macbook air. i'm trying to get my music and my many many many playlists into apple music. my current macbook air is quite old. all the music is on an external hard drive. i tried saving an xml file of the library on my old machine and then plugging the hard drive into the new one and then clicking option key + music and trying to select the xml file but it's not working (it's greyed out). i really just want to be able to move all my playlists and and music into apple music and keep all the files on the hard drive. any help or advice is appreciated. thanks you!!

Hi bigredmachine,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. We understand you are attempting to access your iTunes library from a previous Mac on your new computer. From what you've shared, it sounds like the older Mac may still be using iTunes instead of Music. If so, your iTunes library will need to be upgraded by opening in from the Music app. You should not need to utilize an xml file to do so. The resources linked below should help get you moving in the right direction.

Cheers!
