Fitness+ won’t airplay

I have a new Apple Watch, Apple iPhone and wanted to use Fitness+ on my Apple TV.

It is a third gen. Will not allow screen mirror or airplay from my iPhone to Apple TV except the audio. And won’t download the fitness+ app.

How do I screen a workout ?? I can’t watch on my tiny screen and do dance steps or HIIT classes...?

is this a glitch or do I need to cancel the subscription ?

Hi Sarah—,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. We understand you are unable to AirPlay Fitness+ to your Apple TV. Fitness+ connects your Apple Watch, iOS device, and Apple TV to a single workout. This uses an AirPlay-like feature to share with the Fitness app on Apple TV.

  • This can be accomplished by choosing a workout, selecting "Let's Go", and tapping the "AirPlay" icon in the bottom right hand corner before starting the workout.
  • Here you will be given the option to choose an Apple TV running tvOS 14.3 or later to play the workout on. No other AirPlay-capable devices will appear here as an option to choose.
  • Selecting an Apple TV moves playback to the Fitness app that's on the Apple TV. From the iOS device, you may minimize, but not close the app. Tapping the X on this screen, or force quitting the Fitness+ app on your iOS device will stop the workout on your iOS device, your Apple Watch, and your Apple TV.

Hi Sarah,

If you haven't bought that AppleTV yet, I believe that with the launch of iOS14.5, which is currently in public beta, Apple will be supporting the broadcast of fitness+ workouts to any Airplay 2 compatible device, so hang in there. The caveat here will be that it will only support broadcast of the actual fitness video, if you want the Apple watch metrics (heart rate and rings etc) to be displayed on screen you will still need to use an AppleTV to view the fitness video.

Thanks!

I’ll fill in what I found out so anyone else with this problem can save time.

I phoned and was told that I would need to purchase a new Gen4 Apple TV in order to get classes to visually show on the screen.

Apple programmed Fitness+ so the app will not allow airplay fitness+ video on a Gen3 Apple TV. The music plays but it will not mirror video for this specific app from my iPhone. And I can’t upload the new update to the TV which would upload the Fitness+ app directly on there either, as Apple don’t send this software update to the older Gen3 units.

Essentially the new iPhone, new Apple Watch, current Fitness+ subscription and Apple TV are not enough to make this work - I have to also purchase a new TV Unit.

I can airdrop many other fitness classes through third party subscriptions (Fiit, Peloton) so I’ll stick with those.

I hope this is a bug that will be fixed and not a "feature". I'm a huge Apple Fan, and I really like Fitness+. I used it on my ipad mini, but I wanted a larger screen. I bought an Airplay2 compatible TV for the sole purpose of streaming Fitness+ in my small home gym/office. The workout previews will stream audio and video over Airplay perfectly, but the actual workouts will only stream audio. I have an Apple TV on my living room TV, I don't have a room for one in the gym. I was not aware an AppleTV was required hardware to use Fitness+. I can easily cancel the Fitness+ subscription if this is a requirement, but I'm frustrated I wasted $$ on a TV I have no other use for. Will TVs other that G4 Apple TV eventually be supported?
