Only the Apple technician would be able to address that. Typically Apple "warns" you that any repair may require erasing the the device's storage ... and making backups is good policy for things like this.

You could, but it may be required in order to repair your iPad. Regardless, you should still be able to make a backup to iCloud, at least.
