Can Time Capsule be formatted to APFS?

I really want to format TC in APFS but found no way to do so. I hope Apple add such capability to Airport utility.

Mac mini 2018 or later

No it is not possible..

But if you erase the TC before you start a Time Machine backup with Big Sur it can create a SparseBundle type backup file which is a virtual disk and it is formatted APFS.

Time Machine has always done this with HFS+ formatted disk.. or any other format as long as device conformed to normal Apple requirements.. the virtual disk format is what matters.

Natively it is quite impossible because APFS would need to be ported to NetBSD which is the firmware on the TC and that is a lot of work and ain't gonna happen. Apple is out of router business and I suspect out of NetBSD.
