Beach Ball in Apple Motion on every click

I am using Apple Motion 5.5

Computer: Mac Pro 7,1

Big Sur 11.1

I have been trying to create a Motion project and every click on my trackpad brings me the spinning beach ball

I have deleted all preferences, restarted the MP and still, beach ball ****

Is this a known bug? Any advice on how to fix this?

Thank you and be well.

Mac Pro, macOS 11.1

Try validating all your installed fonts. Both Motion and FCPX will choke (usually crash) on problem fonts.

FWIW, this EtreCheck isn't really that useful. It looks like it mostly dumps out a system profile and some activity monitor information. I'd star with these questions.

  1. Is it literally every click with a new project, or is this an existing project? What are the exact steps to trigger the hang.
  2. Do you have 3rd party filters that are installed and up-to-date?
  3. Are you working with Text? If you are, have you made sure that you don't have any corrupt fonts?
  4. Have you tried booting in Safe Mode?
  5. Are you manually deleting the preferences or using the command-option keys at startup to delete the prefs and additional base config files?

A better report to try is a process sample. Launh Activity Monitor and start using Motion. In Activity Monitor, type Motion into the search field to filter it. Then select it in the list. Now start working in Motion to trigger the hang. When the hang occurs (assuming these are lasting more than a few seconds, Go to the Activity Monitor window and click the gear dropdown and select "Sample Process". Wait for this to run and then save the result. Try posting this. It would also be worth sending this to Apple. Of course send them as much detail as you can about the exact steps you took. As Luis pointed out, trying a clean install could be another way to check, you could also try making a new user account and try running from that to see if it hangs. Both of these would help determine if it might be a hardware or install issue.

Truth be told, some of the fonts that come with FCPX/Motion (examples: Coolvetica, Duality, Franklin Gothic Demibold) have minor problems (all involving 'htmx table') and they work okay. Try removing it from Font Book, restart Motion and see if you have the same problems. If you don't, see if you can find a better version of the font.

However... looking at the font on DaFont.com, that is a *very complicated* font to render even for other apps, not just Motion. If you're trying to render this in 3D, I'm sure Motion would be having "fits"!

Good morning Luis - thank you again.

WIPR is an ad-blocker and should only be working when I am using the Internet - maybe I should try and disable it and then open Motion

Well, I have two Samsung SSD's attached, one is for music samples and the other for Time Machine -- I will try to disconnect both

If that all doesn't work, then I suppose it is a joke the computer gods are playing on me :)
