backup photos on external hard drive

I want to back up my photos and videos on my external hard drive. Which I just did, following your instructions. But it will draw the pictures from my iCloud storage, thus if pictures are lost in iCloud (which recently happened to me), they will be gone from my external hard drive also. How can I make an actual backup that is independent from iCloud, in tif format or something similar?
