Why can't I open documents on my Macbook Air M1?

I just got the new MacBook Air with M1. I love it BUT I can't open any documents on my desktop. Instead of opening, the iCloud icon spins but nothing else happens. What is going on? I need to be able to access my documents. Help!

I can't open a word document I recently downloaded the newest version of Catalina on my MacBook Air. I have some online classes that I have downloaded word documents from in the past with no problem, but ever since I updated my computer, when I try to download a word document from my school's website, it wants to open in Safari and if I click on that, it takes me to my student portal log in page. If I log in, that's it. Nothing happens. I tried uninstalling Microsoft and reinstalling it, but that doesn't work. I can open my own word documents that I've saved to my own computer and to my cloud drive, but I can't open any other documents. I don't know what else to try.

I can not open anymore documents (Word, Excel, Ppts,...) on my MacBook Air since a couple of months. What can I do to recuperate these docs ? Can anybody help how I can get hold of my documents and open them again. Several of my own documents are not to be opened. Example of one of the documents I can not open anymore since a couple of months !

Downloads not showing up in desktop I have a 13 Inch MacBook Air, the 2019 model. In my default browser, google chrome, I went to settings and changed the default downloads folder to desktop so that when I download files, they go to my desktop. However, when I download files, they do not have icons on the desktop. When I clicked the finder icon on the dock and went to desktop, the file has an icon on the folder, but not on the desktop itself. As well, I need to restart my mac in order to have these icons show up, but this issue repeats itself. As well, when they do show up, the stacks do now work. I have three word documents on my desktop (I had to restart in order to get them to show up) and only two of them showed up in the stack - even though they are all the same format (and yes, my desktop stacks are sorted by kind).
