How do I get a second monitor or projector to work with my (M1) MacBook Air?

I am having trouble with using an external display with my MacBook Air (2020, M1/Silicon). I have a variety of USB3 to HDMI adapters, but none work. The display shows up in the menu when set up 'mirroring', but does not display the screen. I would really like to use it as a second monitor rather than mirroring. Advice would be great.

Thanks!

What adapter(s) are you using? There is no need for the adapter to provide power. If your display has HDMI, you can use Apple's Multiport Adapter, but you can also use a simple USB-C to HDMI cable like this one (Amazon link).
