Hello Asfg1952,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities! We understand that after giving your daughter your old iPhone, you appear to be sharing an Apple ID with her on your iPad as well. We'd be happy to help point you towards a resolution.

Do you know if your daughter created her own Apple ID to use on the iPhone or if she just updated the information for your Apple ID to match her own? If your account was not removed from the iPhone before she got it, it does sound like she may have just changed your Apple ID information to her own. In that case you'll want to change it back to your information and have her create a new Apple ID for herself:

  1. Manage and use your Apple ID - Apple Support
  2. How to create a new Apple ID - Apple Support

Once you've done that, ensure the steps in the following resource are followed on the iPhone:

What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Take care.

Hi Asfg1952,

Thanks for getting back to us. Are you seeing a message referring to Activation Lock on the device? If so, you'll need to regain access to the Apple ID and password being used in order to sign out of the Apple ID and remove Activation Lock:

How to remove Activation Lock - Apple Support

If the option to sign out of the Apple ID is grayed out, this could be related to Screen Time settings. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Account Changes and confirm this is set to Allow.

If neither scenario describes that you're encountering, could you provide more details? If you encounter an error message, what does it say? What happens exactly when you try to sign out of the Apple ID? What steps are you taking to sign out?

Cheers!

Hi Asfg1952,

That sounds like there might be some sort of parental controls set up for your daughters Apple ID, which is preventing you from signing out on the iPad. Are you both part of a Family Sharing group?

Were you able to go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Account Changes and check that this was set to Allow? Are there any other restrictions set up under Screen Time on the iPad?

Take care.

Hi Asfg1952,

If the email is grayed out and doesn't give you the option to even sign out of the iPad, this means sign out is restricted due to parental controls on her Apple ID. You'll want to confirm that "Account Changes" is set to Allow on both the iPhone and iPad as it will prevent you from signing out of a device when set to Don't Allow:

Use parental controls on your child's iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

"Allow changes to other settings and features

You can allow changes to other settings and features, the same way you can allow changes to privacy settings.

  1. Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions. If asked, enter your passcode.
  3. Under Allow Changes, select the features or settings you want to allow changes to and choose Allow or Don't Allow.

Here are some features and settings you can allow changes for:

  • Account Changes: Prevent changes to settings for Accounts & Passwords"

If you do see an option to enter the Apple ID password in order to sign out, but she has forgotten the password, she can try to reset it following the steps here:
