trackpad would be an awesome addition. if i connect the ipad to a projector and the lead isnt long enough to put the ipad on the podium with me, the trackpad would be very handy. plus, plugging it in to the tv and being able to fast-forward without having to get up and touch the ipad would be great. Anyone suggesting I should buy a laptop when the technology is already there to do this is very ignorant. I already have a BT keyboard, a BT trackpad would just add to functionality / ease of use.

Actually the pointer concept has already been realized in 'LogMeIn' - when you log on to a remote computer with your iPad, you have an 'iconed' mouse with an arrow pointer which you can then control with your finger on the iPad, so I would assume it could also be possible with the MagicPad - will contact LogMeIn and and see what they have to say ....

Again, get an iMac... The iPad isn't designed for this... It is a peripheral device, not a primary computer...

(this is coming from someone who tends to use the iPad over the laptop or desktop, so I know about how nice it is, but I also understand what it isn't)

Again, not what I happen to want, and what works for you may not work for someone else. I own an iMac. Two, including the latest quad core i7. Several MBPs. Several minis. An Air. Each has a specific purpose at my home or office, for me or a family member. I just replaced my 2007 MBP 15 with the quad core iMac because the iPad is turning into much more than a go-between computer.

I don't need someone telling me how to use my devices. Calling the iPad a peripheral device seems, IMHO, simply silly. If it is a peripheral, why does it work with hard-wired and wireless keyboards? I can manage and create content on it. Who are you to say that I should not also wish to have a peripheral pointing/touch device in addition to a peripheral keyboard? The MT would be nearly ideal for the iPad along with the wireless keyboard.

Sheesh, the arrogance of some people. You are of course entitled to your opinion, but that doesn't mean you're entitled to tell someone else what to do.

You seem to be under some kind of delusion as to what the iPad is supposed to be. It's not a replacement for a laptop but something to use in addition of a laptop. Yes it does provide some of the same functionality but that's as far as it goes. How many computers you have or how powerful they are is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. The iPad isn't what you want it to be and according to the way Apple have designed it and are marketing it to be used it won't be either.

The external keyboard support is there as typing extensively on a touch screen is not necessarily practical or easy. However it is a touch screen device and does not have any cursor support so using a mouse or track pad is neither possible nor needed due to the way it has been designed to be used.

Personally I rather Apple focus on more important issues regards the iPad and iPhone then spend their time and energy on useless unnecessary features which only a small minority of people may want.

For the same reason PalmPilots worked with external keyboards... No one ever questioned them being peripherals... You could create and manage content on Palms too, so your argument is baseless...

The magic trackpad defeats the purpose of having a touch screen... The trackpad would require a cursor to function. If a cursor were available, inevitably developers would begin to create apps that require the cursor. This would take us right back to the laptop, the very thing the iPad is trying not to be...

I really would love to see the Magic Trackpad on my iPad. I agree after you set the iPad in the dock it's very difficult to use the keyboard and tap on the iPad. Makeing the new trackpad act like the iPad itself would we GREAT.
Apple please add this to the iPad ios4. Thanks a lot.

It would definitely have appeal for those who use the ipad as a remote controller for another computer, or for those with it docked vertically. It's simple. The trackpad is an exact mapping of the ipad's screen. We would just need visual feedback to see where we are. I'm thinking a transparent blurred circle to represent each digit on the pad, like a water drop looking thing.
