They might be "over the moon" but the thousands of business users in my company have shown no interest in having a mouse of any device other than their fingers for this (in fact most in the field selected the iPad because they could avoid using a mouse). If those users you are discussing want to use a mouse or trackpad in the hotel room, and they already have MBPs, where is the problem?
Just bought an iPad air, wireless keyboard and Magic Trackpad. I can't believe the trackpad isn't compatible! I assumed I'd be able to keep a monitor at work and just hook up the iPad along with the keyboard and trackpad and go to it. I can't believe I'm the only one who would like to do this. Does Apple care about their customers or do they think they know what's best for us?
That just reminded me of a quote, "we have to show them what they want!"

Apple has always worked from the premise that they know what we need, even if we don't think it's what we want. Nothing new. I wouldn't say that means they don't care about their customers, though.
Apple could easily add Magic trackpad support to iOS. Just mimic the support found on the iOS emulator; without a mouse pointer, but with gray circles instead. Obviously this would benefit Apple's customers, based on the popularity of this tread.
I suspect Apple is just avoinding internal competition; they would sell less MacBooks and iMacs.
Note the iPad is getting more and more powerful. Soon, besides the Magic trackpad support, they could add a miniport to the iPad with external screen support. The same way they extended the iOS to support the screen of the iPad, they could extend the iOS again to support external screens (e.g. 4K screens). At this point you could install iOS in your MacBooks and iMacs (they could have touch screen as well). Also note all of this without mouses or mouse pointers.
So, adding Magic trackpad support to iOS would be the begning of the ending of the Mac OS.
When the iOS devices get within a fraction of the power of the OSX computers, maybe. You start holding your breath now, and I'll start when it seems likely.
I couldnt agree with you more! This has been an increasing urge of mine since I started working with my iPad for real.
Especially text editing (selecting text etc) would be so much easier. And sometimes it is just a pain to switch between a keyboard and clicking on the screen - It is just not ergonomically correct. I want something that works in between an iPad and a MacBook Air..
If this wont be added soon, I might have to consider something like a Microsoft Surface Pro 3..
I'm not really sure about the usefulness of a trackpad, but it wouldn't be difficult to incorporate a "pointer" to be used in conjunction with the trackpad, which only appears when you put your finger down on the trackpad. You lift off and it disappears again.

I am with you, mtnmedic. Screen <--> desktop <--> keyboard is annoying and... tiresome.
Why not map the whole iPad screen to the trackpad?
