Air Pods connect separately

My AirPods are working as two separate devices that connect and disconnect independently. I can only hear audio out of the left or right but never together. The problem started about two weeks ago and nothing works. I’ve tried resetting them in the AirPod cases and resetting the connection through settings. I’ve drained the battery’s and recharged them and they still won’t connect as one unified device.
