I have no particular interest in a website. I have a domain name registered with machighway which has not been able to provide error free service. I just want to keep the personal email address that I've used for years. Which host can you recommend with reliable service, relatively cheap, and Mac friendly.

All good, but--- I want to keep a personal email address that I've used for 20 years. (I also have an apple and a google address but they're not as widely distributed amongst friends, etc. and I don't want to try to get 100's of folks to change.)

I use DidgitalOcean, HostPapa, and GoDaddy. I have not had any issues with any of them. DigitalOcean is the cheapest for me but it requires you to manage just about everything yourself.
There are many more hosting companies out there. This really is not an Apple Support Communities question as it has nothing to do with Apple.
I have used Earthlink for years and it has served me well. It does, however, have a small monthly fee, but they also offer a lot of extras. Second, for what it is worth, I long ago gave up using Apple's Mail app. I evaluated many available apps and settled on using Thunderbird, which is free. It has more features than the others and superior support. And I never have any problems with it.

google have their gmail
all are free and works fine for me I use them all along with aol and yahoo which are also free
