Big Sur won't allow Touch ID on 13" MacBook Pro 2018

Upgraded to Big Sur 11.1 and Touch ID didn't work anymore. Tried rebooting. Tried deleting the two fingerprints that were working before upgrading to Big Sur.

Now the the Touch ID comes up in System Preferences but clicking + does nothing. Cannot add a fingerprint back into the system. Rebooted twice. Same problem -- cannot add a fingerprint.

Any ideas other than pray for a patch to come out soon?

We are just end users like yourself.

We can't speculate if there is a fix pending. Report it to AppleCare directly.

But also look at the configuration details for fingerprint here:

Resetting SMC (System Management Control) solved the problem. I learned how to do it from OBXCyberGuy. Here is what he posted from his phone call with Apple. His instructions are easier to follow than the directions in Apple help.

Perform an SMC reset ... Twice. Hold the control+option+right shift for seven seconds, then add the power button for another seven seconds. release and press the power button to boot up. Log in, then shut down and repeat. worked like a champ for my Macbook Pro. The rep said that this is easier in newer models.
