HomePod mini

Hi. I have just bought a HomePod mini for my partner for Xmas. I cannot get past the setup part for it on my iPhone. It just says “no wifi connection”. All my reading on the problem now tells me that I need to have a wifi connection in my house. (which I don’t have). I would have imagined that I could just connect an apple speaker to an apple phone but it seems I may be wrong. Could somebody tell me if I have wasted my money ??

From HomePod - Technical Specifications:

System Requirements

  • HomePod with the latest version of software
  • iPhone SE, iPhone 6s or later, or iPod touch (7th generation) with the latest iOS; or iPad Pro, iPad (5th generation or later), iPad Air 2 or later, or iPad mini 4 or later with the latest iPadOS
  • 802.11 Wi-Fi Internet access

Once configured it is technically possible to AirPlay to HomePod using an ad hoc connection with an iPhone, but you need Wi-Fi access to setup the device and enable this mode, and it isn't possible to use the iPhone as a hot spot for this.

You should be able to return the device from where you purchased for a refund if it turns out not to be suitable for your needs.
