Status bar shows in Safari on iPad Mini, but not any larger iPad

Just gave my wife a new iPad Air for Christmas to replace her old iPad Mini 4. She noticed that the Status Bar no longer appears when she's in Safari and some other apps (like Kindle) where it used to show up all the time. I notice that it doesn't appear on my iPad Pro, either. At first, I thought it might be because the Air upgraded to iPadOS 14.3 during the initial install. Her Mini is running 14.2, but so is my Pro, so it's not the iPadOS version. Any way to keep the Status Bar on the larger screens?
