Sync files from a usb drive to iCloud

Is it possible to sync files from a usb 1TB disk to iCloud by creating an alias under 'Desktop'.

Mac mini 2018 or later

I must have made some wrong choices in setting things up. I want to be independent of the 'cloud' and use it only for backup, if at all.
