is my Apple TV damaged if it is constantly on or do you recommend turning it off when not in use?

Hold the 'Home' button down until the 'Sleep' option appears then click the trackpad aread. This will slee[p it and prevent it using the internet. There is no need at all to disconnect it from the mains.
