We bought a used iPhone 8 for our daughter’s friend. She needed an 8 to connect her new Apple Watch (not ready for new / new phone yet).
The person we bought it from forgot to wipe the phone to prep it for the next user.
I am afraid if I enter the passcode wrong 10 times - when it “auto” wipes - that it will lock permanently and we can’t reset it for the new user to set up with her passcode and Apple ID.

You will need to contact the person you got it from in order for them to remove their Apple ID. Unless you can do so, this phone will be of no use to you or your daughter. No one here, nor Apple, can assist you with this.

If it doesn’t ask for an Apple ID you are in good shape.
To confirm. If they disconnect the Apple ID and phone remotely as described in the procedure- then I won’t need the Apple ID for when I reset the phone? All I will have to do is get their passcode. Go into settings and wipe the phone ?
