1st gen Apple Pencil won’t work with procreate

Hi, can anyone help. I have the 8th gen 2020 iPad and a 1st gen Apple Pencil and although it’s paired, I can’t use it to draw. It shows a light black circle where the tip of the pencil is but no marks are made on the page. Using my finger works fine. Thanks
