2012 Mac Pro do not have Thunderbolt capability, and there is NO WAY to add Thunderbolt capability to a Mac that left the factory without it.

So the answer to which Thunderbolt Display(s) you can attach to that Mac Pro is absolutely NONE.

2013 is a completely different model, so if that is Not a typo, start a new discussion about that model.

apple cinema display 27” (2560 x 1440) | XXXXXXXXXXX | model A1316 | MC007LL/A

thanks a ton grant. apologies for being such a dope about this.

i am taking notes so i have it in the future. to add to the dumbness i see now i have a 24" monitor apparently and not a 27". so even just a 27" alone would be an upgrade. here is what i have put into my notes:

current:

ATI Raytheon HD 5770 1024 MB graphic with 2 x Mini Display Port and 1 x VGA port (per visual inspection and your image).

apple cinema display 24" (1920 x 1200). > not sure where i find the model number for it.

possible upgrades:

1 x Apple Cinema Display 27" (2560 x 1440) Model: A1316 / MC007LL/A

2 x Apple Cinema Display 27" (2560 x 1440) Model: A1316 / MC007LL/A

1 x Apple Cinema Display 30" > need specifications for this.

how am i doing?

hi grant. thanks i’ve been trying to research this.

so for the cheese grater mac pro i can do one 24” LED mini DP, one 27” LED mini DP (the last two listed in that link) or i can do two 24”, or two 27” or one of each?

OR i can also do one 30” “dual link DVI”? which would - well it would take up the one DVI port on my graphics card?

On that card, you can run up to three displays independent of each other, each as large as 2560 by 1600.

There is no shortage of any resource that will diminish performance of one display or limit it in any way because of the connection of another display.

However if you play games, every pixel still has to be drawn, so having a larger effective display by combining multiple displays into one "extended desktop" will slow the game's ability to Draw all the pixels and reduce the frames-per-second that can be computed. This grpahic is the best explainer of "Extended Desktop":

hi grant.

THANK YOU. you’ve been a lifesaver for me for many years.

so i could try to move to a 27”? and also hook up my 24” and see if the rendering in any of my CAD programs have trouble lagging?

any reason other than aesthetics to not get a 30” aluminum one if i can find one?the resolution looks close?

27” (2560 x 1440) versus 30” (2560 by 1600). i guess it is significant difference?

Dec 27, 2020 10:14 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

ack. grant. i just ran out after talking to a guy locally about a 27” display that turns out has thunderbird port. anyway he was in IT and offered me his 30”.

it seems to have a power cord and a firewire and a DVI port. he also gave me a DVI to mini DP adapter.

i was only able to get it recognized (i will try again) with the DVI to mini DP adapter.

is there a way to set higher resolution? i am on high sierra.

everything i try to google seems to be telling about getting newer computers to hook up to older monitors.

is this the part where you referenced something about needing a whole manual?!

Dec 27, 2020 10:18 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

hey man. help me here please?(!)

i was able to get it recognized with a DVI to mini DP adapter. but the display is highly rasterized and i cannot see any option in settings to fix this.

do i try to get it recognized with the DVI port only and no adapter?

can you help me with some search terms or a link or something? it’s like a black hole over here not knowing what to search for.

and i am not even totally sure i understand what your reply means to be honest. i need to do some tinkering??
