In my initial question I DID specify that the PC had only usb a connections.
Unfortunately, Apple does not make one of these - and I have read reviews where off-brand cables have ruined ipads....I was hoping someone had another work-around - I just bought an apple adapter that I will have to get a male to male usb a cable in order to use, but I don't want to damage my nice new ipad. I was surprised to find that the usb c cable was double ended usb c and not a usb a to usb c! Very frustrated over that one!

How would that help in connecting to a PC?! PC's only have usb a type connections.
Wrong, PC's can have various connectors.
You never actually said what connectors your PC had.
So you can use any USBA to USBC cable
To be fair you answered your own question
You have two options -
Buy a USBA to USBC or adaptor.
Thanks! I looked and they didn’t list these easily found! Wish I had seen it sooner before buying what I did! If mine doesn’t work I’ll be buying this one!
