LG Ultrafine 5K M1 Mac spurious vertical shift in a 2 inch band on screen

I recently got a M1 Mac Mini, and have been using it with my 2019 LG Ultrafine 5K display (made in ¡Mexico!). Previously I used it with my Intel-based MacBook Pro with no problem at all, though there is one problem that I keep on hitting with my new M1 Mac. At times during boot somehow it creates a permanent vertical band in which every pixel is shifted from its position by a few points in Y-direction. It happens randomly, and unless I reboot my computer the effect doesn't go away. The vertical band appears around center of screen. Interestingly, if I take screenshot or record a QuickTime video when the problem appears, it does not seem to appear after reboot. So the problem is not recordable using built in screen recording applications. I will take a picture from my phone camera next time around for the Apple team, I wonder if anyone else in the community has had similar problem? I have done my part by filing the bug to Apple, but have received no response.

Hi Ross,

I can confirm that using the USB-C cable seems to avoid the problem.

I have an M1 Mac mini and a LG UltraFine 5K monitor that was purchased in November (so presumably it's the latest incarnation). It came with two cables:

  • Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) with white lightning bolt symbols at each end
  • USB-C cable

I've also tried a USB-C cable purchased at a local store. Here's what I've found:

  • The LG provided Thunderbolt 3 cable sometimes shows the vertical band of shifted pixels. The problem can be induced or fixed by sleeping the monitor via a hot corner, though it might take a few tries.
  • The LG provided USB-C cable does not show the problem. I slept the monitor and canceled logins to get a black screen a couple of dozen times and could not reproduce it.
  • The "store bought" USB-C cable does not work at all. It does not drive the monitor - the monitor stays black. That avoids the problem but it's a poor solution. ;-)

As you've pointed out, the sacrifice with the LG provided USB-C cable is that one maxes out at 4K (3840 x 2160).

I'm going to call Apple again to see where they're at with this.

I know the feeling.

Apple should at least share this known issue on the display description to inform potential buyers. Or make a statement ensuring owners and potential owners a solution is in the works. If there is no actual solution, then they aught to make it right. I have a feeling owners of these displays are heavily invested into the Apple ecosystem.

Where do you find the manufacture date? I looked on the sticker on the box and it is not there.

So...know one really knows what is causing it...MacMini or the monitor....I really thought is was the cable but no it was not.

I bought this one at B&H which has a liberal return policy for 30 days. They where out of stock when I wanted to replace it. I ordered another one for when they are in stock...maybe it is a batch issue?

Thanks, I will let the swapped monitor come in....I will check the man. date...

If it still occurs then I will have to put up with it...it seems not to occur when the mini goes to sleep on its own...that is just a guess...

Actually, no one really knows if it is the monitor, mini or the cables...

I really like the monitor....I probably will just put up with it...if it really becomes a pain I will just get another 5K brand of monitor ... but if we really do not know for sure if it is the monitor or the computer we are really working blind on this...

thanks for the info...appreciate it...

I agree with you on all points .... even though I bought the monitor through B&H because they have what is called a PayBoo card and they pay the sales tax and as long as you pay the balance off when do there is no service charge.

I decided that I will wait for the 2nd one from B&H and live with the issue because the I like the monitor.

I bought the Mac mini through Apple. I actually find it irritating that most of the Apple stores do not stock the computers anymore....at least in my area....my "s in l" waited over two weeks for her 27" iMac a few months ago shipped from Ireland...

My mini was shipped from China....at this point there appears to be no solution. I will swap my monitor with B&H because of another problem. The power cord has a poor contact with the receptacle...If I adjust the monitor I have to fuss with it to get a good connection. It could be the power cord...I may try a different one if I have the same issue with the replacement...

After I get the replacement I will be back to update

It did not resolve the issue. I thought it was fixed because the problem didn't crop up for a couple of weeks after getting the monitor back from LG repair. However, the pixel shift cropped up yesterday and again this morning.

I've tried both the Thunderbolt cable that came with the monitor. I've also tried this Anker Thunderbolt cable. The pixel shift issue happens with both cables.

Thanks for all your answers guys !

I desperate really !

Today, i return my mac mini M1 and i have the choice to return the monitor too. So i really hesitate. As i am a designer, i can’t work with this pixel shift even if it’s random…waiting maybe the day Apple will correct this bug or sell a new monitor less expensive than the XDR (sorry for my poor english :)

Best

I bought an extended warranty from B and H....at least I think I am covered...a major mistake on Apple's part for partnering with LG...plenty of other dedicated monitor makers out there....too bad there are not too many 5K monitors available yet...

I have had a lot of trouble with the power cord being too loose in the receptacle...I just replaced it with another one I had....the difference is that the supplied LG power plug is slightly small than you would pickup on Amazon or a similar vendor. Again, I really expected top of the line hardware with the monitor and I was disappointed with the body of the monitor and also, of course, the power cord for the price of the monitor. The display is great so far but there really is no excuse for these issues.

Same issue here. I had a bad run with LG 10 years ago and vowed never to back their brand. But this display being the "ideal" offering for my M1 mini setup, meant I caved. I figured they have surely improved over a decade of development... 1 week old $1900 display. Problems out of the box. I will replace this display as many times as I need to at the cost to LG until a better offering is presented to me. Even if it means ACCC refund in 2 years allowing me to move to another brand.
