Diagnostic Code PPT006 - Battery stopped charging after new OS 11.1 Installed

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)

2.9 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5

8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3

Intel Iris Graphics 550 1536 MB

Hi - immediately after installing the OS 11.1 Big Sur, my battery started dropped 99..98..97 all the way down to 1%. It is now stuck on 1% permanently and giving the diagnostic code PPT006

  • Cycle count is only 213 - refuse to believe there is something all of a sudden wrong with the battery with the update
  • Have already done PRAM, SMC Resets, reinstalled OS, etc.
  • Tried with a brand new charger in a totally different outlet and same

Any other idea of this error code why OS 11.1 is giving me this code and won't charge the battery?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.1

Hi,

PPT006 means the battery requires service. The battery is not functioning normally, though you may not notice a change in its behavior or the amount of charge it holds. You can continue to use your battery before it’s checked without harming your computer.

Contact Apple or take your computer to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store to learn which service and support options are available.

Hi Eethhsaan,

Unfortunately absolutely nothing, I refuse to get this fixed as it's software, not hardware so I just leave my laptop plugged in. Between what they quoted me for fixing something that is not a hardware issue and the price of new computer I will just buy a new laptop. This is still broken even after the lastest software update, and I see no end in sight. Further example of them releasing software updates to destroy our products and force us to buy new ones!

Best,

Mark

Hi Mark,

I am doing the same, but yesterday I came across this Reddit thread https://www.reddit.com/r/applehelp/comments/gu1kfk/battery_health_management_issues_macbook_pro_13/ where the user with the same issue got his MacBook fixed without paying anything as if it was Apple's fault and they realized it and fixed it for free.

So I was thinking of visiting the service center once.

And I think you should too.

I will let you know what happens.

Thank you,

Eethhsaann

My late 2016 13" MacBook Pro came up with this same issue. On an apple support page it says that there is a free repair order for this problem on this laptop. When I call in though she said they would charge me for the repair because mine has the Touch Bar so is exempt from the repair order. Seems a bit fishy to me but what do I know. There are supposed repairs in the newest updates but hasn't worked for me either. Mine started a few days ago before I updated to Big Sur.

Hi Kevbo,

I was about to post the same.

I contacted Apple Support after the Free Replacement Program announcement (which included my model) and after showing the invoice they agreed and now I am waiting for them to receive the necessary component.

And yes they asked me for the service charges too but I insisted them to chat with the higher-ups and that paid off, now I don't have to pay anything.

Thanks

Good news for me, and big thanks to you Eethhsaann, I called back and spoke with a senior advisor and at the same time realized that my screen had a "service program" eligibility because of the backlight "Stagelighting" also a service program for the keyboard keys getting gunk under them (second time) and then this battery issue.

He was able to get all three on the repair order and I sent it in Monday, before noon on Wednesday I have it back and almost the whole thing is new.

Logic board replaced, display assembly replaced, top case with battery, ANSI replaced. So it seems like the battery gets replaced as part of the keyboard program.

Thanks Apple!
