If anything goes wrong, you will need a recent backup to recover.
Time machine is an INCREMENTAL backup mechanism, and (presuming the system can operate on Power adapter) you can connect that same backup drive and it will do an incremental backup. If it has been more than a few days, it will take all afternoon or longer of "awake" time to compute what has changed, then several more hours to back it up.

18 mos ago. My son took Time Machine when he moved 8 mos ago. I have no more backup. What do you suggest?
