This device is not eligible for additional coverage. (Apple watch SE)

I was planning on buying applecare for my watch after pickijng it up from target this morning, and when I go to check the coverage it says "This device is not eligible for additional coverage".

Is there any way I can show proof of purchase / pickup today, and recieve applecare?

My instinct says you need to check the existing dates on the watch. Go to https://checkcoverage.apple.com/ and put the watch serial number in. If you get a date which doesn’t stack up with your purchase date you might have a repackaged return from a previous buyer, or a grey import.

If the dates look good you need to contact Apple direct to find out why it is not accepted. You will find the contact info near the bottom of the page at https://www.apple.com/support/products/watch/, or make an appointment at your nearest Apple Store.
