Why is iPhone saying passcode has expired?

My iPhone is saying my passcode has expired and I must change it. I’ve not seen this before so I’m concerned. Is this a new policy update or a scam of some kind?

You probably have a work email account on your phone that has passcode requirements, or your device is managed by someone else..

The Iphone hadn't done a backup in months and I have a ton of critical data on the phone for my job that could potentially cost me my job if I can't get it back. Talked to apple support and the only option they can offer is wiping and starting from scratch. Seems to me if the update caused my passcode to change there should be more support from apple to rectify the issue.
