Cannot hear myself when using AirPods for phone calls

I just got AirPods for Christmas. My family got them for me in part because they thought it would help me when I'm on conference calls. Turns out, when I talk on the phone using the AirPods, I can't hear myself speak. My own voice doesn't come back through the ear buds - they do not provide a "monitor". The AirPods do a good job of sealing out outside sound, and as a result, I really can't hear myself. It's very disorienting. Is there any way around this? If not, I won't be using these for calls as I don't like not being able to hear myself speak.

Hey there, exponential,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities. We see that you have some concerns over the performance of your new AirPods and would be happy to give you some information.

You can turn off the Noise Cancellation on your AirPods to see if that helps with hearing yourself on calls: Change noise control modes on AirPods with iPhone - Apple Support.

If not, you can let Apple know the types of features and capabilities you'd like to see in future AirPods here: Feedback - AirPods - Apple.

Best.
