Is BlackHole virtual audio driver safe?

I was considering downloading BlackHole v0.2.6 virtual audio driver from GitHub to build a Multi-Output Device on my macOS Big Sur iMac. When I google "BlackHole", I saw some warnings about a BlackHole exploit kit, Trojan, Malware, etc. See for example: https://www.computerweekly.com/news/2240160362/Twitter-users-targeted-by-Blackhole-malware

That is completely different. It is only because "black hole" is a popular name.

It appears to be as safe (from malicious activity) as any other software. It is a kernel extension, so there is no way to tell if it will create havoc inside your system.

for myself i use the signed soundflower kext to reroute audio between apps. i've been using it for quite a while and haven't any issues with it yet. i usually recommend it because it only puts a single file on the mac. when people can't get it to work, i'll recommend blackhole. i don't use it myself so i can't say that it's 100% safe. however, the last time someone used it after hearing about it from me was about 2 weeks ago. they haven't come back to this thread (or other threads) to tell me they have had problems, so i'm guessing it's fine.
