Apple Watch series 2 not being recognised.

My brother gave me his old series 2 apple watch. It was working perfectly fine. He restored it and I can't connect it to my iPhone 11. I've tried pairing it with my phone using the watch's animation, but my iPhone will recognise a watch, but won't progress into the pairing process. It twice brought a notification saying that I need to update the watch, but will not proceed to downloading the update. Likewise, I have tried pairing the watch manually. My iPhone recognises the watch, but the 6 digit passcode requested by the iPhone does not even appear on the watch! I have no idea what to do.

First, make sure your brother ran through each step in this article, to ensure the Apple Watch is ready for a new user: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Apple Watch, or buy one from someone else

It's also recommended, before switching the Apple Watch to a new iPhone, to complete any watchOS updates first Update your Apple Watch, and make sure the new iPhone (your iPhone 11) is up to date too: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Apple Watch requires it to be paired to an iPhone in order to update the watchOS. If this Apple Watch needs to be updated, you'll want to see if it can be paired with the original iPhone (your brother's) to see if the update can be completed before attempting to pair it with your iPhone: Set up your Apple Watch
