Safari on Big Sur - windows reopen en masse

I'm on Big Sur 11.1, Safari 14.0.2. I only use Private Windows, and typically have several tabs open in each of two or three windows. My preferences are set to open Safari with "All windows from last session."

When I quit Safari (or reboot) then launch again, each of the prior windows opens twice. So if I have three windows (with however many tabs) open when I quit, I see six on next launch. All tabs are in each pair of windows. Quit and relaunch again, now it's twelve windows, and on and on, unless/until I remember to close the extras.

Anyone else seeing this? Any suggested fix?

Hi Cohen,

We see that when you quit Safari and select to reopen "All windows from last session" you see them duplicated. Making sure your tabs open properly is important so your desktop is not cluttered. We're happy to help.

If you test using a new user do they open in multiples as well?

Set up users, guests and groups on Mac

Another test would be in safe mode to rule out any extensions that could be causing this.

Start up your Mac in safe mode

If the issue continues reach back out to the community with the results of those steps and if this happens when not in Private Browsing.

Have a good day!

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for the response!

I just created a new user on the same Mac. I launched Safari, and confirmed no plugins were active. I set the preference as shown above ("All Windows from Last Session"). I created a new private window, with two tabs, each open to a different web site. I quit Safari, and launched it again. I experienced the same problem. Safari had two windows open with the same pair of tabs. I quit Safari again, then relaunched, and Safari now had four windows open with the same pair of tabs.

I did not try safe mode, but I will when I can next test that. The machine is reasonably clean.

I created a Feedback, FB8956297, containing a sysdiagnose and a screen recording, if you want to take a look.

Thanks again!
