Apple refuses to refund my money

This is long so I apologize ahead of time.

I bought my son an iPad for Christmas. It was the only thing I could afford and the only thing he really asked for all year. So, I set up an account for him on it because he was unable to use it without an account I guess, and I bought him Minecraft. Unfortunately, I had no idea that my debit card information could be used by my 7-year-old son to make purchases on the iPad. It seems to me that his account (which is an underage user account) should not be able to access any financial information even if I purchase apps or games for him on that iPad.

I found this out the hard way. The day after Christmas, while I was at work, my son purchased and downloaded 7 different apps or games. He had purchased over $75.00 in games or apps and that was all the money I had in the bank. Actually more money than I had in the bank. My son said he didn’t know they cost money. So as soon as I discovered I was overdrawn in my bank account and why, I contacted Apple. I got the run around in Chat for the majority of that morning before I had to go to work. I was never put in touch with a person until after I got home that night. Then I was told I had to go through iTunes and request a refund so that what I did. She didn’t bother telling me that I would have to log into MY SONS account to se whether or not I had gotten the refund!

Now, I am not tech savvy, but Apple is, and it seems to me that some kind of notification system should have been enabled AUTOMATICALLY when setting up an underage user account so that the parent or guardian is made aware of what is happening.

During my request for the refunds, I was told that there is an option for that, that I have to enable it with the Family Sharing, but honestly, as a single parent, I just haven’t had the time to read all the ins and outs. I think Apple is counting on this though and taking advantage of people like me. Underage user accounts should automatically have restrictions in place to guard against this.

Anyway, I just logged in to my son’s Apple account to find out that my request for refunds of all that money has been denied with NO explanation!! I guess they don’t think I should be notified through MY email about decisions regarding MY money!! I’ve been sitting here hoping to hear back that all or part of it at least would be refunded.

I am SO mad and really worried. I don’t know how I’m going to get back and forth to work with no gas.

I felt I had no choice but to take the iPad from my son because I don’t have time to figure out stuff like this and I can’t afford for anything else to happen. Apple has taken advantage of the ignorance of people like myself and taken all the money we have and won’t refund it. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions about this? What can I do?

Hello DMC1776,

Apple's terms of purchase for most countries are effectively, "All Transactions are final" (check terms at: http://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/ ). Apple may refund on a case by case basis, but realize they can also say no.

You could try asking again:

https://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html

or

https://support.apple.com/country-selector/itunes

Technology is wonderful but it isn't always simple or error-proof. Apple often includes warnings and documentation about features but people often skip them, such as not reading about how Family Sharing with a child works. You should set up Ask To Buy on your child's account so you can negotiate how things will be paid before you agree to an order.

Family Sharing and Apple ID for your child - Apple Support - https://support.apple.com/HT201084

Request and make purchases with Ask to Buy - https://support.apple.com/HT201089 - Family Organizer receives requests by default, but another parent or guardian can be assigned permission.

Good luck!
