I have text message forwarding set up on my iPad (iOS 14) to received non-iMessage texts sent to my iPhone on iPad. However, if I read the text messages on my iPhone, the iPad doesn’t updates and still shows those messages as new / unread in notifications.

Do you have Messages in iCloud enabled across your devices? If not, turn it on across your devices and see if the issue is resolved. You can read more about this here:

Use notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Do this from both your iPhone and iPad just to be on the safe side and let us know if this helps.

Yes I have iCloud messages on.
I am able to get messages on iPad but the unread count doesn’t sync, so it shows I have 10 unread messages on my iPad/ Mac when I’ve already read them on the iPhone.
