Setting up a 2nd hand iPad

My son was given an older iPad. The person who gave it to him gave us the PIN but doesn't remember the password to the APPLE ID they used. Is there anyway to reset it with my own appleID from home? We don't have an Apple store close.

The person who gave him the iPad can recover the AppleID

and passcode used to initiate the Activation Lock using these links:

If you forgot your Apple ID  - Apple Support

If you forgot your Apple ID password  - Apple Support

Or

If the donor were the original purchaser and can prove it with

a receipt from Apple or Apple authorized iPad retailer showing

the serial number of the iPad, the donor can make a genius bar

reservation and bring in the receipt, iPad, and government

issued photo ID to Apple and they may assist in resolving the problem.

If the iPad was purchased used or there is no receipt, the AppleID and passcode must be recovered

It is highly recommended that you make a Genius Bar Reservation to avoid delay at the Apple store

Do you know how old this iPad model is? What year and generation of iPad?

That iPad is Activation Locked.

Without all of the information to this iPad from its previous owner, you will never get this iPad to work for you ever.

There are no other ways/procedures to defeat/circumvent user Activation Lock

Apple will not help you in this instance.

Apple may help you, IF, the original, previous owner has the original Apple receipt for this iPad and can go with you to your nearest Apple Store to submit proof of ownership and can remove the lock.

Another wrinkle.

If this old iPad is over 8 years old or nearly 10-years old, that iPad is NOT worth dealing with these issues.

Apple ended support for 8-10 year old iPads, at least, over 3 years, ago.

The internal hardware in that iPad is too old, too underpowred and completely incompatible with all later versions of iOS/iPadOS.

Virtually, all third party iOS app developers ended/stopped/abandoned supporting these old iPads over two years, ago.

There are virtually, NO MORE older iOS 9 or 10 compatible apps available from the Apple iOS App Store, any longer.

You wiil NOT get any older, compatible apps for very old iPads, any longer!

If the version of the iOS Safari Web browser is old ( 3 years old or older ) that Web browser cannot be trusted and is no longer secure nor safe to use to access the Internet.

Simply put, old 8-10-year old iPad models are too old and obsolete now.

Sorry. this is fact niw.

You maybe better off just recycling the device with Apple.

If you need/want an iPad with an up to date iPadOS with access to current, updated apps, then you really need to seriously consider a new iPad model OR a much, MUCH “newer” , used iPad model capable of running the latest iPadOS versions.

There are plenty of newer, older and less expensive iPad models that can run the latest, current versions of iPadOS.

Sorry & Best of Luck to You!
